Afghan authorities have issued nighttime restraining orders in 31 of the country's 34 provinces, citing an increase in Taliban attacks, the interior ministry said.
Since the beginning of May, the Afghan Taliban have seized dozens of districts across the main border and laid siege to some provincial headquarters.
"A night curfew has been imposed in 31 provinces across the country, except Kabul, Punjab and Nangarhar, to prevent violence and limit the Taliban movement," the statement said.
The curfew order will be effective from 10 pm to 4 am local time, Deputy Spokesperson of the Ministry of Interior Ahmed Zia told reporters. The group claims to have regained power after the complete withdrawal of US-led foreign troops and has taken control of half of Afghanistan's nearly 400 districts. The Taliban have stepped up their violent activities across the country as US troops prepare to withdraw.
Violence eased during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha this week, but government security forces have stepped up attacks. Government officials have claimed that more than 260 Taliban fighters have been killed in the past 24 hours in retaliation.
Government officials and the Taliban have been exaggerating their claims but have not been able to independently substantiate them, local activists say.
